MARRIAGE LICENSE - FAQ'S
What do I need to bring with me to apply
for a marriage license?
Nothing
is required if both applicants are 22 years of age or older. Proof of age
required for those 18 and through the 21st year. Males and females 16 and
17 must be accompanied by one parent or legal guardian for their signature
consent.
Do I need to get a blood test or am I
required to take any kind of class?
No.
How much does it cost to get a marriage
license?
$20 for Lapeer
County residents, and $30 for Out of State residents.
Do you take Debit or Credit Cards?
No. Cash,
Check, or Money Order Only.
How long does it take to get a marriage
license in Michigan?
The day of
application is the first day of the 3 day waiting period. Marriage
licenses may be picked up and used, on the fourth day after application,
unless the fourth day is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday.
How long do I have to use the license?
The license is
valid for thirty-three days from the date of application.
Do both people have to come to apply for
the marriage license?
No. If only one
applicant is present, however, please be sure to know the following
information for each individual:

How do I know what county to get my
marriage license in?
The answer
depends on whether or not you are a Michigan resident. If you are, you
need to get your license in the county in which either you or your future
spouse reside. The license can then be used anywhere in the state. If
you are not a Michigan resident, you must get your license in the county
where you want to be married in order for it to be valid.
Must witnesses to marriages be 18 years
old?
Yes,
the State of Michigan does require that the witnesses on a marriage
license be 18 years of age.
What name should the Bride and Groom use
when signing the Marriage License after the ceremony?
The State of Michigan now requires that
the Bride and Groom sign their married name on the Marriage License after
the ceremony has taken place.
