LAPEER COUNTY COMMUNITY FACILITIES
Major Governmental Centers Lapeer County's District, Probate and Circuit Courts are located in the City of Lapeer in the Lapeer County Complex. Each township, city and village within Lapeer County has its own governmental center. The Lapeer County Cooperative Extension Office and U. S. Soil Conservation Service both have offices located in Mayfield Township.
Health Care Lapeer Regional Hospital, located in the City of Lapeer, licensed for 273 beds (1991), provides acute and extended care services. There are over 80 physicians (MD's and DO's) practicing in Lapeer County. Other hospitals near Lapeer are located in Flint, Rochester Hills, Pontiac and Port Huron. Lapeer County Mental Health Center, located in Mayfield Township, services the County. There are five Ambulance Substations located in Lapeer County in the Villages of Almont, Metamora and North Branch; City of Lapeer and Imlay City.
Police and Fire Protection The Lapeer County Sheriff's Department, located in the City of Lapeer, includes the County Jail. The County Sheriff's Department provides service throughout the County and also contracts additional services with several communities. The Michigan State Police post, located in the City of Lapeer, also provides service to the County. The City of Lapeer, Imlay City, Lapeer Township and the Villages of Almont and Otter Lake serve their municipalities. Police Departments for the Villages of Metamora and Dryden provide service to the Villages surrounding Townships. The Michigan Department of Corrections operates a medium security prison, Thumb Correctional Facility, in the City of Lapeer. Fire Stations are found in all cities and townships except Rich, Oregon and Burnside. The city and village fire departments typically serve the surrounding area. Four fire departments located outside the County serve parts of Lapeer County.
Roads The Lapeer County Road Commission serves the County and has it main office in Mayfield Township and substations in Imlay and North Branch Townships.
Education and Culture There are three museums in Lapeer County. The Imlay City Historical Museum, the Orr's Museum in North Branch and the Columbiaville Historical Museum. The Lapeer County Library Office and Marguerite DeAngeli Branch Library are located in the City of Lapeer. Branch libraries are located in the Villages of Clifford, Columbiaville and Otter Lake; in the Townships of Metamora, Elba, Goodland and Hadley. Other libraries, not part of the County system, are Henry Stephen's Memorial Library in Almont, Ruth Hughs Memorial Library in Imlay City, Dryden Township Library in the Village of Dryden, and the North Branch Library in the Village of North Branch. Lapeer County has six public school districts. Lapeer Intermediate School District, Lapeer Community Schools, Almont Community Schools, Dryden Community Schools, Imlay Community Schools and North Branch Area Schools. Private schools in Lapeer County include Bishop Kelley Catholic Schools, Imlay City Christian School, Trinity Baptist Church Academy in Imlay City and Wesleyan Academy in North Branch. C. S. Mott Community College, Flint; University of Michigan, Flint; Baker College, Flint; GMI-EMI, Flint; Oakland Community College, Bloomfield Hills; Oakland University, Rochester; St. Clair Community College, Port Huron are colleges and universities located within a 50 mile radius of Lapeer County.
Historic Sites The State Historic Register includes ten privately owned homes, ten public buildings, three private commercial buildings and one archaeologic site. The public buildings and businesses on the State Historic Register include the Columbiaville Rotary Club and Public Library, Columbiaville Methodist Episcopal Church, Dryden Community Country Club (General Squire Historic Park Complex), Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dryden Ladies Library Association Hall, Imlay City Museum Depot, Lapeer County Courthouse (City of Lapeer), Clifford School, St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church (Village of Clifford), Eagle Tavern, Pioneer State Bank, King's Cider Mill. The National Historic Register includes seventeen residences, three public facilities, two commercial properties, one archaeologic site (also on State Historic Register) and four historic districts. The historic districts are the West St. Clair Street Historic District (two separate districts); Piety Hill Historic District (City of Lapeer); and Metamora Crossroads Historic District.
Recreation General Squier Park - An 80 acre park in Dryden Township. Activities include two activity buildings, with restrooms and kitchen, fishing, softball diamond, play equipment, nature trails, pavilions, and a winter use area with sledding, ice skating, cross country skiing and bobsled rides. Torzewski County Park - A regional facility on Pero Lake in Oregon Township. Activities at the park include two water slides, play pool, boat rentals, concession, softball diamond, pavilions, nature trails, court games, and a winter use are with sledding, ice fishing and cross country skiing. Metamora Hadley Recreation Area - A 643 acre facility in Hadley Township. Facilities include two campgrounds, trails, picnic area, swimming beach, canoe and rowboat rental, modern restrooms and concession. Ortonville Recreation Area - A recreation area containing 4,000 acres of land (3,000 in Hadley Township, Lapeer County and 1,000 in Oakland County). Facilities include boat launching, swimming, fishing, campsites, picnic area, restrooms with showers and playground equipment. Seven Ponds Nature Center - A 245 acre year round nature center in Dryden Township maintained by the Michigan Audobon Society. The nature center includes six lakes, nature trails, reintroduced prairie land and a building containing a library, bookstore and exhibit rooms. Jonathon Woods - A 144 acre preserve in Dryden Township owned and operated by the Nature Conservency. Lapeer State Game Area - A 7,000 acre wildlife area in Mayfield Township. The area provides public access and fishing on all lakes except in the 400 acres of the Canadian Goose Refuge. There are 40 miles of trails for horseback riding and snowmobiling. Holloway Reservoir Regional Park - A 3,500 acre park located in both Lapeer and Genesee Counties. The park includes picnic areas, boating, swimming, baseball diamonds, cross-country skiing and passive recreation. Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds - The fairgrounds is a 36 acre site in Imlay City which hosts the annual Eastern Michigan Fair. Municipal Parks - Most cities and villages in the County have parks. Private Clubs - There are several private clubs in the County including the Adventure Travel Club, D Bar A Scout Ranch, Hunters Creek Club, Lapeer County Sportsman's Club and Metamora Hunt Club.
Waste Management The Sexton Landfill, Burnside Township, is an 80 acre site used for solid waste disposal. This is the only Act 641, Type II Landfill in Lapeer County. Lapeer County has a Solid Waste Management Plan which was updated in 1990. The Solid Waste Management Plan provides some long range considerations and options for waste management such as public information, waste reduction, resource recovery, recycling incentives for the private sector, a conveniently located depository for brush, leaves, construction material, etc. (Type III solid waste), development of additional transfer facilities to collect solid waste for transport to landfills outside the County and the lack of an in-county landfill in the future leading to increased disposal costs and increased road deterioration.
Utilities There is a lack of sanitary sewers outside of cities and villages. Communities providing their own water and sanitary sewer services (see map) are: Village of Almont, water and sewer; Village of Clifford, water and sewer; Village of Dryden, water and sewer; Lake Nepessing, sewer; Imlay City, water and sewer; City of Lapeer, water and sewer; Village of North Branch, water and sewer; Village of Metamora, water (sewer under development); Village of Columbiaville, water and sewer.
Transportation Airports - Almont Airport, Almont Township and Dupont-Lapeer Airport, Mayfield Township are privately owned public-use aviation facilities and serve local air traffic. Commercial airlines and carries can be accessed at Bishop International Airport, Flint, Tri-Cities Airport between Midland, Saginaw and Bay City, Detroit City Airport and Detroit Metropolitan International Airport, Detroit. Railroads - Grand Trunk Western Railroad provides service from Chicago to Toronto, CSX Transportation has tracking rights and Amtrack also maintains two passenger trains per day along this route. The C & O Rail Line, now called CSX Transportation, provides two trains per day between Saginaw and Brown City. Public Transit - The Greater Lapeer Transportation Authority (GLTA) is an on demand bus system serving the City of Lapeer, Elba, Oregon and Mayfield Townships. Department of Senior Activities Council has an on demand system and there are various school bus systems. |
