P.A. 116 FARMLANDS
The Farmland and Open Space Preservation Act, Michigan Public Act 116 of 1974, allows a landowner to sign a "development rights agreement" which states that the land will remain as either agricultural or open space for a specified period of time, with a minimum of ten years. This program was instituted to preserve agricultural land. Lapeer County makes extensive use of P.A. 116 as a preservation tool. As of October, 1992, there were 69,555 acres enrolled in P.A. 116 for farmland and open space preservation in Lapeer County. The majority of these lands are located in the northeastern portion of the county corresponding with the areas of productive soil (see map next page).
