A Lapeer County Library Initiative

Abstract

Target Audience's Need for Project: Lapeer County departments, agencies and commissions have an abundance of diversified public information ranging from animal regulations to toxic waste procedures. We are basically a rural area with a dispersed population. According to 1990 US Census Data, over 60,771 of our 74,768 residents live in non-farm rural areas. Present methods of information access are unwieldy and costly both to the information seekers and providers. Making this information accessible to the public in a timely manner through a centralized electronic distribution point and linked to The Michigan Electronic Library is vital to the needs of the County residents and a valuable resource for others.

Description of the Project:
Lapeer County Library Community Information Center Development focuses on the need for access to Lapeer County Government information and the role of Lapeer County Library in providing a gateway to that distributed information. By expanding the Lapeer County content on LapeerNet, Laper County's community network, we will improve organization of and access to local government information. The Lapeer County Library Community Information Center Development Project will assist Lapeer County Governmental units in evaluating, organizing and making accessible valuable local information relevant to individual's daily life experiences. that will inform individuals of:

Explanation of Project Activities: The Lapeer County Library will work with and train recruited county departments, agencies and/or commissions in Web site development and maintenance and will mount their information on our community networking server housed in the Library. We will enhance our server to allow for interactive communication and help the county entities mount applicable client software on their computers. The Library will prepare promotional and information presentations in a variety of formats to inform the residents of Lapeer County and outside parties of our enhanced information delivery services.
