What do I need to do to get married in the historic Lapeer County Courthouse?

Michigan's oldest continual use courthouse is available for weddings and special events.  The Lapeer County Courthouse has been a part of its citizen's lives since the county's earliest days.  Make it a part of your family's history by holding your wedding in it's historic chambers.

How do we reserve the Courthouse?
You may make a reservation for the use of the facility through the Lapeer County Buildings and Grounds Department.  A registration form is required.  The Courthouse is available both on weekdays and weekends.  It is advised that you make your reservations at least two weeks in advance. The Courthouse may not always be available without advanced registration.  Weddings held during regular business hours may be accommodated with a few days notice.  Weddings held on weekends or after hours must be scheduled five days in advance.

You may choose to have your ceremony on the lawn or the Courthouse steps.  There are no special requirements for using the public space outside of the building.  However, it is always best to check with Buildings and Grounds to be sure no other events are scheduled for the same time.

Our Courthouse is undergoing a major renovation.  By using the Courthouse for your ceremony, you are given the opportunity to contribute to the restoration of the historic Lapeer County Courthouse.  A suggestion of $75.00 is made, however larger donations are greatly encouraged and will help tremendously in reaching the goals of this ambitious project of preserving our past for future generations.  Learn more about this project by reading Questions and Answers About the Restoration of Our Lapeer County Courthouse.

For more information contact Lapeer County Building and Grounds at 810-667-0245.

Who will perform our ceremony?
You may provide your own minister or you may ask to be married by a Magistrate or District Judge.  A charge of $10 is required.  You may pay by personal check or cash.  It is suggested that you call at least one week in advance to ensure that your schedule can be accommodated.

Call 71-A District Court for further information at 810-667-0300.
